VR Forklift Training Simulator – Sit-Down (OSHA 1910.178)

Humulo’s VR forklift training simulator covers sit-down counterbalance operation: pre-operation inspection, controls, load handling, travel and stacking, run against a 10K Hyster or a 6K Doosan in the same virtual warehouse. About 60 minutes of content, repeatable, on a standalone headset. Built to carry the formal instruction and practical exercise portions of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l) — the employer still performs the workplace evaluation on a real truck.

Included with every Humulo headset along with the full library. Every trainee gets their own seat at no extra cost.

VR Forklift Training Simulator – Sit-Down (OSHA 1910.178)

Category

Description

What this module is

This is the sit-down counterbalance forklift module in Humulo’s OSHA library. A trainee runs a pre-operation inspection, learns the controls, then moves loads through a warehouse: travel, turns, stacking, and the visibility problems that cause most of the damage. Every chapter can be run with a large truck (10K Hyster) or a small one (6K Doosan), so the training matches the equipment the operator will actually be assigned. Budget about an hour for a full pass.

Pre-operation inspection, done as a task instead of a checklist

The inspection chapter is the one that changes behavior. Trainees teleport around the truck and press hot buttons on the actual inspection points; the system confirms what they are checking, for example tires for cuts, gouges and wear. They have to find the points rather than tick a laminated sheet, and they have to decide whether what they found takes the truck out of service. Operators who have done this in a headset ten times perform a real pre-shift inspection differently from operators who watched a video about one.

How this maps to OSHA 1910.178(l), and where it stops

29 CFR 1910.178(l)(2)(ii) splits operator training into formal instruction — lecture, video, written material — and practical training, meaning demonstrations by the trainer and exercises performed by the trainee. 1910.178(l)(4)(iii) then requires an evaluation of each operator’s performance in the workplace at least once every three years, and 1910.178(l)(4)(ii) requires refresher training after an accident, a near miss, an unsafe-operation observation or an assignment to a different type of truck. The employer certifies the training and evaluation under 1910.178(l)(6), recording the operator’s name, the dates and who performed them.

The honest limit: a simulator can carry formal instruction and a large share of the practical exercises, and it is genuinely better than classroom-only for the decision-making parts. It does not discharge 1910.178(l)(6). Someone still has to watch the operator drive the real truck in your real aisles and sign the evaluation. Any vendor telling you VR alone certifies a forklift operator is misreading the standard.

Licensing and price

This module is not priced on its own. It comes with every Humulo headset along with the whole library, and every trainee gets their own seat at no extra cost. Most VR training vendors will not publish a number without a sales call. Humulo’s are on the site, and they are the same numbers quoted to a two-person shop and to a Fortune 100 plant.

Frequently asked questions

Can VR forklift training certify an operator under OSHA?

No vendor’s training certifies an operator by itself. 29 CFR 1910.178(l) requires formal instruction, practical training, and an evaluation of the operator’s performance in your workplace. VR can carry the formal instruction and much of the practical training. The workplace evaluation on an actual truck is still the employer’s responsibility, and it has to be repeated at least every three years.

Which forklift types are modeled?

Sit-down counterbalance, in two sizes: a 10K Hyster and a 6K Doosan. Any chapter can be run on either, so the trainee practices on something close to the truck they will be assigned. A separate physical control rig is available for standing forklift training.

How long is the training?

60+ minutes for a full pass across the chapters, which is longer than most modules because load handling and travel need repetition. Trainees can repeat individual chapters without redoing the whole thing.

What does VR forklift training cost?

There is no per-trainee fee: every trainee gets their own seat with the full library at no extra cost. Headsets run $2,349 in year one and $750 per headset annually after. A one-headset 30-day pilot is $3,499 and fully refundable, which is the cheapest way to test it against your own operators before committing.

Does it work without internet?

Yes, once the module is loaded. That matters for warehouses with poor coverage on the floor and for government or defense sites where a cloud-connected platform is not going to get approved.

Full deployment detail is on the VR forklift training page. Stand-up rider trucks, riding pallet jacks and order-picker cages are a separate module: VR stand-up forklift and pallet jack training, because 1910.178(l)(4)(ii) treats a different type of truck as new training. Other modules: VR fire extinguisher training, VR lockout/tagout training, VR confined space training. Program-level overview: enterprise VR safety training. Also in the library: slips, trips and falls, fall safety climbing simulator, hand safety, HAZWOPER/HazCom. Every standard is indexed on OSHA training requirements.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

To develop muscle memory in learning safe forklift operations per OSHA standards.

OVERVIEW

Any chapter can be performed with a large forklift (10K Hyster) or a small forklift (6K Doosan).

  • Chapter 1: Operating the Forklift: Pre-Operation
    1. Pre-operation Inspection, Largely guides users to get comfortable with the VR practical.
      1. Trainees teleport around the forklift, they press hot buttons located on the forklift that relate to inspection points. When they press a button, the voice confirms they are, for example, “Checking the tires for cuts, gouges and other sign of wear and tear.”
      2. Trainees must select the proper PPE for checking a propane tank/fittings. They select from 5 or 6 PPE laid out on boxes.
    2. Operational Inspection: User is in the forklift seat, is guided through testing each of the forklift controls. Drives the forklift FWD and REVERSE.
  • Chapter 2: Operating the Forklift:Traveling & Maneuvering
    1. Trainees start in the forklift seat
      1. They are instructed to drive to a spot and properly shutdown the forklift. They have to reverse, maneuver obstacles and follow the popper shutdown process.
  • Chapter 3: Understanding the Workplace: Pedestrian Traffic
    1. Trainees start in the forklift seat
      1. They drive to a lined road, drive down it backwards, stop at the stop sign, look both ways, turn, then drive to a spot. Slow down, stop and sound horn at intersections, corners, and wherever vision is obstructed.
      2. They need to signal to pedestrians to stand clear. When encountered
      3. They need to warn pedestrians of your approach by horn, hand signal, or warning light.
      4. Forklift operators should keep a safe distance from workers on foot and other pedestrians.
  • Chapter 4: Understanding the Workplace: Ramps and Grades
      1. Trainees start in the forklift seat
      2. Trainees are required to drive up a ramp to retrieve a load, bring it to a designated location.  They must observe the following or be corrected.
        1. Trainees must observe on ramps in general
          1. Stay away from edges
          2. Never turn on the ramp
        2. Without a load
          1. Travelling up a ramp without a load: 1. Need to drive backwards up the ramp. 2. Need to be looking behind you the entire time (direction of travel)
          2. Travelling down a ramp without a load: 1. Drive with forks down the downgrade
        3. With Load
          1. Travelling up a ramp with a load: 1. drive with load in front, straight 2.
  • Travelling down a ramp with a load: 1. Forks are up the incline, drive backwards and look backwards
  • Chapter 5: Understanding the Workplace: Narrow Isles
    1. Trainee starts in the forklift seat
      1. They take the forklift down an aisle (needs to be wide enough for either 6 or 10k) and get a box off a high shelf.
      2. They will need to position the box safely for safe load carrying
      3. Deposit the box in the proper location
  • Chapter 6: Understanding the Workplace: Enclosed and Hazardous Areas
    1. Trainee starts in the forklift seat
      1. Drive a forklift, pick up a box, drive into an enclosed warehouse, put the box on a shelf.
      2. When the user drives into the warehouse, the door closes behind them.  They should put the box on the shelf and turn the engine off when they are finished due to the enclosed space.
