VR Confined Space Training Simulator (OSHA 1910.146)

Humulo’s VR confined space training simulator covers both sides of a permit entry — the entrant inside and the attendant at the hole. Trainees identify permit-required spaces, work the atmospheric and engulfment hazards, read what a permit has to contain, and hold their role through the entry. About 15 minutes per scenario on a standalone headset. Built to support the training required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146.

Included with every Humulo headset along with the full library. Every trainee gets their own seat at no extra cost.

Description

What this module is

This is the permit-required confined space module in Humulo’s OSHA library, and it covers two roles rather than one: entrant and attendant. Trainees learn to tell a permit-required space from a non-permit one, identify the hazards that make it permit-required, recite what a permit has to contain, and then hold their assigned role through an entry. Roughly 15 minutes per scenario.

Training the attendant, not just the entrant

Confined space fatalities cluster around would-be rescuers. NIOSH has documented this pattern for decades: someone goes down inside, a coworker goes in after them without equipment, and the employer loses two people instead of one. The attendant role — stay outside, maintain contact, summon rescue, do not enter — is the single hardest thing to teach because it asks somebody to not help. Rehearsing it in a headset, where the pressure to go in feels real and the consequence of going in plays out, does more than a paragraph in a handout.

How this maps to OSHA 1910.146, and where it stops

29 CFR 1910.146(g) requires employers to train employees so they acquire the understanding, knowledge and skills for their duties, before first assignment, when duties change, and when a hazard or a deviation in the program shows up. Paragraphs (h), (i) and (j) then set out the specific duties of authorized entrants, attendants and entry supervisors that the training has to cover.

The honest limit: this module does not evaluate whether a trainee can use your gas meter, your tripod and your retrieval line, and it is not rescue training. 1910.146(k) requires rescue and emergency services to be evaluated and able to respond — that is a live capability with real equipment, and no simulator substitutes for it. Your written permit program and your space inventory remain yours.

Related OSHA answers

Two questions come up on every confined space program review, and both are answered paragraph by paragraph: is confined space training required annually? and how often must practice rescue exercises be conducted? The short version is that the training triggers in 1910.146(g)(2) are event-based, while the 12-month clocks sit in (k)(2)(iv) and (d)(14).

Licensing and price

This module is not priced on its own. It comes with every Humulo headset along with the whole library, and every trainee gets their own seat at no extra cost. Most VR training vendors will not publish a number without a sales call. Humulo’s are on the site, and they are the same numbers quoted to a two-person shop and to a Fortune 100 plant.

Frequently asked questions

Does VR confined space training meet OSHA 1910.146?

It supports the training obligation in 1910.146(g) and covers the entrant and attendant duties described in (h) and (i). It does not replace your written permit-required confined space program, your space inventory, hands-on competency with your own atmospheric monitoring and retrieval equipment, or the rescue capability required under 1910.146(k).

Which roles does the module cover?

Authorized entrant and attendant. The attendant path is the more valuable half, because attendant discipline is what prevents the multiple-fatality rescue attempts that NIOSH has documented repeatedly in confined space incidents.

How long does it take?

15+ minutes per scenario. Running both roles takes about half an hour, and most employers have trainees run the opposite role at least once so each person understands what the other is responsible for.

What does VR confined space training cost?

There is no per-trainee fee: every trainee gets their own seat with the full library at no extra cost. Headsets are $2,349 in year one and $750 per headset per year afterward. A fully refundable one-headset 30-day pilot is $3,499.

OVERVIEW

Entrant Scenario:

Trainees will begin in a shipyard by collecting the required equipment (clipboard with permit, pen, oxygen monitor, radio, ect). They proceed to the confined space and fill out the permit with the attendant. Trainees must then take a reading of the oxygen levels, and adjust the ventilation equipment if required to get oxygen levels into the acceptable range. Trainees then enter the confined space and perform the inspection. Once complete trainees must finish filling out the permit and sign it. Finally, the trainees are faced with a rescue scenario requiring them to notify emergency personnel and rescue an incapacitated worker.

Attendant Scenario:

Construction site setting, non-entry rescue required to be identified and acted upon by the attendant (the trainee) after setting up the site.
