VR Fire Extinguisher Training Simulator (OSHA 1910.157)

Humulo’s VR fire extinguisher training simulator drops a trainee into a shipyard walkthrough: find the Class A, B and C hazards, pull the alarm, pick the right extinguisher, and put the fire out with correct sweep technique. Runs about 15 minutes on a standalone headset, with no burn pan, no propane and no extinguisher recharges to budget for. Supports the annual education program and designated-employee training an employer owes under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157(g).

Included with every Humulo headset along with the full library. Every trainee gets their own seat at no extra cost.

VR Fire Extinguisher Training Simulator (OSHA 1910.157)

Description

What this module is

This is the VR fire extinguisher training module in Humulo’s OSHA library. A trainee puts on a standalone headset, tours a shipyard, and is scored on identifying fire hazard classes, raising the alarm, selecting an extinguisher that matches the fire class, and discharging it with a correct sweep. One run takes about 15 minutes. It replaces the live-burn logistics — pan, fuel, recharges, an outdoor space, a wind-dependent schedule — not the fire itself.

What a trainee actually does

The scenario is sequenced, not a sandbox. Trainees walk the shipyard and tag combustibles, flammable liquids and energized electrical equipment as Class A, B and C. They pull the alarm before engaging. They locate an extinguisher, check it, and carry it to the fire. Then they discharge it — aim at the base, sweep side to side — and the fire responds to whether they did that correctly. Getting the class wrong or standing too close produces a failed attempt rather than a pass, which is the part a slide deck cannot do.

How this maps to OSHA 1910.157(g), and where it stops

29 CFR 1910.157(g)(1) requires an educational program covering the general principles of extinguisher use and the hazards of incipient-stage firefighting for any employee expected to use an extinguisher, and (g)(2) requires it at hire and at least annually after. Paragraph (g)(3) adds training on the equipment itself for employees designated to fight fires under an emergency action plan, also annual. This module is built to carry that content and to produce a per-trainee completion record.

The honest limit: OSHA does not certify training products, and neither does Humulo claim it. If your authority having jurisdiction, insurer or fire marshal specifically requires a live-fire evolution, VR does not substitute for it. What VR reliably replaces is the annual refresher for the large population of employees who will never touch a real extinguisher in training because the burn pan only gets through thirty people a day.

Licensing and price

This module is not priced on its own. It comes with every Humulo headset along with the whole library, and every trainee gets their own seat at no extra cost. Most VR training vendors will not publish a number without a sales call. Humulo’s are on the site, and they are the same numbers quoted to a two-person shop and to a Fortune 100 plant.

Frequently asked questions

Does VR fire extinguisher training satisfy OSHA?

OSHA does not approve or certify training products from any vendor. 29 CFR 1910.157(g) requires an educational program at hire and annually, plus equipment training for employees designated to fight fires under an emergency action plan. A VR module can deliver and document that content. If a fire marshal, insurer or authority having jurisdiction separately requires a live-fire evolution, VR does not replace it.

How long does the module take?

About 15 minutes per run. Trainees can repeat it as many times as they want, which is the practical difference from a burn pan where each employee typically gets one discharge.

What does VR fire extinguisher training cost?

Pricing is per headset, not per trainee: every trainee gets their own seat with the full Humulo library, not just this module, at no extra cost. Headsets are $2,349 in year one and $750 per headset for service after that. A one-headset 30-day pilot is $3,499 and is fully refundable.

Which headsets does it run on?

Meta Quest and PICO 4 Ultra Enterprise. It runs offline once loaded, so it works on secured or air-gapped sites where a cloud-dependent platform will not.

Can we train a group with one headset?

Yes. The $500 multicast kit mirrors the headset view to a TV or projector so a class watches the run and the instructor debriefs it, then trainees rotate through.

OVERVIEW

Trainees will begin by touring a worksite (shipyard) identifying various fire hazards, including Class A combustibles, Class B flammable liquids, Class C electrical hazards, and examples of general construction site fire hazards. After a fire breaks out trainees must>>>>> alert pull the fire alarm, alerting emergency personnel and services. Trainees must then pick up a fire extinguisher, pull the pin, and fight the fire. Trainees are required to spray the extinguisher side to side at the base of the fire continuously until they put>>>> successfully put the fire out. Trainees must maintain a safe distance from the fire, and use appropriate spraying technique in order to safely put out the fire.
