Why Replace Live-Fire Training With VR?
Traditional fire extinguisher training burns through consumables, limits practice reps, and creates safety risks. VR changes all of that.
Most organizations recover VR deployment costs by eliminating recurring live-fire expenses within the first year.
Built to Satisfy OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 sets two separate training duties, and most facilities run them together. Paragraph (g)(1) requires an educational program on the general principles of extinguisher use for every employee expected to pick one up, repeated at least annually under (g)(2). Humulo's simulator is built to carry that educational program and to document it per trainee — timestamps, scenarios attempted, and performance scoring that stand up to an audit. No permits, no outdoor burn pads, no recharge costs. The separate hands-on duty under (g)(3), which applies only to employees your emergency action plan designates as fire responders, is covered below.
What OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 Actually Requires, and Where VR Fits
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 sets two different training duties and they apply to two different groups of people. Paragraph (g)(1) requires an educational program on the general principles of extinguisher use and the hazards of incipient stage fire fighting, for every employee expected to use an extinguisher, repeated at least annually under (g)(2). Paragraph (g)(3) requires something stricter, hands-on training with the appropriate equipment, but only for the employees your emergency action plan designates as fire responders, repeated annually under (g)(4). Humulo's VR fire extinguisher training carries the (g)(1) and (g)(2) educational program and documents it per trainee. It does not replace the (g)(3) hands-on requirement for your designated responders.
That distinction decides how many people you actually have to put through a live burn. In most plants the (g)(1) population is everyone on the floor and the (g)(3) population is a dozen people. Sizing those two groups correctly is usually where the money is.
| Paragraph | Who it applies to | What it requires | How often | Humulo VR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1910.157(g)(1) | Every employee expected to use a portable extinguisher in your workplace | An educational program covering “the general principles of fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with incipient stage fire fighting.” The standard names no delivery method. | Upon initial employment | Satisfies it. This is the requirement the simulator is designed against. Trainees identify the fire class, choose an extinguisher, and execute P.A.S.S. while the system scores them. |
| 1910.157(g)(2) | The same group | That same education, repeated. | At least annually thereafter | Satisfies it. Unlimited repeat sessions at no consumable cost, each one writing a fresh timestamped record per trainee. |
| 1910.157(g)(3) | Only employees “designated to use fire fighting equipment as part of an emergency action plan” under 1910.38 | “Hands-on training in the use of the appropriate equipment.” | Upon initial assignment | Does not replace it. VR is strong preparation, and we think it makes the live session shorter and safer. But OSHA asks for hands-on practice with the extinguisher types actually in your building. Budget for both. |
| 1910.157(g)(4) | The same designated group | That same hands-on training, repeated. | At least annually thereafter | Does not replace it. Same reasoning as (g)(3). |
| 1910.157(b)(1) | Facilities with a written total-evacuation fire policy, an emergency action plan and fire prevention plan meeting 1910.38 and 1910.39, and no extinguishers available to employees | Exempt from this section unless another Part 1910 standard requires an extinguisher to be provided. | — | Nothing to satisfy. If this describes your site, you may not need a fire extinguisher trainer at all. Tell us on the call and we will say so. |
| 1910.157(c), (e), (f) | The equipment, not the people | Selection and distribution, mounting and identification, annual maintenance checks, and hydrostatic testing. | Varies | Out of scope. No software inspects a physical extinguisher. This stays with your facilities team. |
The 2020 OSHA VR interpretation letter does not cover 1910.157
You will see vendors cite OSHA's August 10, 2020 letter of interpretation as proof that VR is approved for fire extinguisher training. Read the letter. It answers questions about HAZWOPER (1910.120), electric power generation (1910.269), and bloodborne pathogens (1910.1030). It does not mention 1910.157, and to our knowledge OSHA has issued no interpretation addressing VR under the portable fire extinguisher standard at all. Anyone telling you otherwise has not read it.
So we do not lean on it. Our compliance argument rests on the text of (g)(1), which describes an educational program and specifies no delivery method, which means a well-documented VR program is as defensible as a slide deck and considerably easier to evidence. That is a narrower claim than some of our competitors make. It is also the one we can defend in front of your auditor.
An earlier version of this page overstated our own position in a different way: it said the simulator satisfies the hands-on training component. It does not, for designated employees under (g)(3). Corrected October 2026. If you were shown that claim by us, this paragraph is the retraction. For how VR maps across the other OSHA standards, see our breakdown of which OSHA standards accept VR, the VR safety training program overview, and enterprise VR training deployment.

Grab the Wrong Extinguisher. See What Happens.
The Practice Lab puts live fire scenarios in your trainees’ own space and makes every wrong call visible. A live-fire day gives each person a pull or two on one extinguisher. The Practice Lab gives them as many reps as they want, on all six.
Proven in High-Risk Industrial Environments
“After replacing our annual live-fire extinguisher drills with Humulo VR, we eliminated burn-day downtime and reduced training disruption across three facilities. The built-in documentation gave our safety team confidence heading into audits.”

Inside the Fire Extinguisher Training Simulator
Humulo’s fire extinguisher training system replaces live-fire drills with a fully immersive VR simulation. Here’s what a typical session looks like — from headset pickup to audit-ready completion record.
Trainee Puts on the Headset
The fire extinguisher simulator launches automatically. No apps to open, no logins. The trainee is standing in a realistic facility environment — warehouse, office, kitchen, or industrial floor — within seconds. The system works completely offline, so there are no network dependencies even in remote or air-gapped facilities.
Fire Breaks Out — Trainee Responds
A realistic fire ignites in the environment. The trainee must identify the fire class (A, B, or C), select the correct extinguisher type, and apply the P.A.S.S. technique: Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze the lever, Sweep side to side. The digital fire extinguisher trainer tracks every decision — response time, aim accuracy, sweep pattern, and extinguisher selection.
Mistakes Are Learning Moments
If the trainee grabs the wrong extinguisher for the fire class, the fire extinguisher training simulator shows what happens — the fire spreads or reignites. This safe-to-fail approach builds real decision-making under pressure, something no classroom video or paper quiz can replicate. Trainees can repeat the scenario immediately, building muscle memory through repetition.
Completion Record Generated Automatically
When the session ends, the fire extinguisher training system generates a per-trainee performance record: completion timestamp, scenarios attempted, pass/fail status, response metrics, and OSHA 1910.157 alignment documentation. These records are audit-ready and exportable — no manual paperwork, no instructor sign-offs, no compliance gaps.
Fire Extinguisher Simulator vs. Traditional Training Equipment
Traditional fire extinguisher training systems require burn permits, outdoor space, consumable materials (fuel, extinguisher recharges), and weather cooperation. A single annual live-fire event costs $2,000–$8,000 per session in materials alone. Humulo’s VR fire extinguisher simulator eliminates all recurring consumable costs. One headset trains unlimited employees, unlimited times, in any indoor space. The system pays for itself by replacing your first annual live-fire drill.
VR Fire Extinguisher Training Simulator: Full Specifications
Humulo’s VR fire extinguisher training simulator covers all three common workplace fire classes — Class A, Class B, and Class C — across four facility environments (warehouse, office, kitchen, and industrial floor) plus a shipyard hazard-identification tour. A session runs 15+ minutes and requires the trainee to identify the fire class, pull the alarm, select the correct extinguisher, and execute the complete P.A.S.S. technique while the system scores response time, aim angle, standoff distance, sweep coverage, and extinguisher selection. It runs on a PICO enterprise VR headset, works fully offline with no network connection, and generates a timestamped per-trainee completion record aligned to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157.

What a Trainee Must Demonstrate to Pass
The simulation scores against these enabling objectives. A trainee who skips the alarm, grabs the wrong extinguisher, or stands too close does not pass, and can re-run the scenario straight away.
- Identify Class A fire hazards (ordinary combustibles)
- Identify Class B fire hazards (flammable liquids and gases)
- Identify Class C fire hazards (energized electrical equipment)
- Alert emergency services by pulling the fire alarm
- Locate a fire extinguisher and prepare it for use
- Fight the fire using correct spraying technique from a safe standoff distance
- Fully extinguish the fire and confirm it does not reignite
